WEBSITE
RETROFIT

Whether you are happy with your present design or not, it may be time to take stock of how effective your website is, and whether it has been left behind by changes in technology and attitude.

Websites have been around long enough now that almost everyone has one. Like corporate brochures, companies are now reviewing their appearance and content every few years to make sure they accurately reflect the products, services and attitude of ever evolving organisations.

Non techies may not be aware, but there are 2 major changes happening in the world of web.

  • The technical web protocol is changing.
Old HTML commands are becoming obsolete (or deprecated as they call it). With each release of a new web browser, the way your HTML code is displayed on screen changes slightly. The "good practice" methods of building websites are changing, with a focus on layers and style sheets being the most obvious, and having benefits in both search engine visibility and the legal requirement to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
  • There is a major change in the concept of the web, so much so they call it Web 2.0 - this isn’t a technology but an attitude
It took the music industry several years to work out that online distribution of their products could work in their favour, but not until they had spent a lot of time and money looking like the bad guys. Online advertisers used to charge for "page views", the trend now is "cost per click". Rather than fighting the battle to get people to return/stay on your site, there are now methods of putting your content in front of them when they go elsewhere. In short, the world is waking up after the dot com failures to the reality of a user led, measurable internet.
